How the dollar bill value checker works
Every US bill carries an eight-digit serial number. Most run-of-the-mill serials are worth exactly face value, but a small fraction form patterns that collectors will pay a premium for. This free checker reads your serial, looks for those patterns, recognizes star notes and older series years, and shows a rough ballpark range. It's the same detection logic that powers the Follow the Money iOS app.
What counts as a "valuable" serial number?
The headline patterns are solids (every digit the same, like 88888888), ladders (12345678 or 87654321), radars that read the same backwards (12344321), repeaters (45674567), binaries built from just two digits (01010101), and very low serials (00000007). A trailing star (★) marks a replacement note, and any pre-1957 series year tips a bill into vintage territory. Our fancy serial numbers guide walks through each pattern with examples.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what my dollar bill is worth?
Enter the eight-digit serial number above and press Check. The tool flags fancy patterns, star notes, and vintage series instantly, then shows a rough collector range. Remember most bills are worth their face value — this just helps you catch the exceptions.
Where is the serial number on a dollar bill?
It appears twice on the front of the note — upper-right and lower-left — as letters plus eight digits, for example A 12345678 B. If it ends in a star instead of a letter, you have a star note.
Is this checker an appraisal?
No. The dollar figures are rough ballpark ranges, not a guarantee or an appraisal. Real value depends on condition, exact series, seal color, and current demand. For anything promising, get a second opinion from a community like r/papermoney or a professional grader.
